The husband and I decided tonight we would use the O’Hungry’s $10 for $20 voucher I purchased awhile back at SignOn Daily Deals. We lived in Old Town for a few years and both work in the area so we are not strangers to O’Hungry’s but it’s been awhile since we’ve been.

I’ve never been a super fan of this restaurant. The food has never been great and the service was generally poor. With that being said, our visit tonight was pretty great.

I didn’t take any photos of the food. I’m not sure why, that’s usually a rule.. Don’t touch until I take a picture! but today, I forgot.. instead you get to see my husband’s mug with tonight’s live entertainment in the background (music starts at 5:30 Thursday-Sunday)

The Food
They have a $5 dinner menu which starts at 4:30 each day. You can get baked chicken, country fried steak, spaghetti, or mahi mahi along with potatoes, steamed vegetables and a roll for only five bucks.

I got the chicken fried steak, it was actually really good. I ate it up. It’s the perfect size.. not huge, not small. The sides weren’t anything to write home about.

My husband got the same thing he always gets, unlimited soup for $5.99. They had three soup varieties. He generally tries them all but sticks mainly with the corn chowder.

Drinks
If you know about O’Hungry’s you know about the Yards of Beer, fun… but we stuck with their current special, $1 drafts.. um nice!

Service
They are always understaffed so be prepared to sit for a bit. The server (the only server) tonight was awesome though.. she had eight or nine tables and worked them all without missing a beat. Always friendly, always a smile. She should get a raise (or two).

Conclusion
It is what it is.. think truck stop without the trucks. It’s a good place to go for food on the cheap. You certainly aren’t going to claim it to be the best food you’ve ever eaten but it’s a fun atmosphere in the evenings.. sometimes it gets loud in there (boys watching football, people singing with the band) but all in fun and heh.. they sell beer by the yard!

The downtown Bare Back Grill is one of my favorite places to eat. I’m even confident saying they serve the best burger (to date) I’ve ever had. All the beef is 100% organic and you can really taste the difference.

On our latest visit, my husband and I both got the Patti M’ Melt ($10.90) which has grilled onions, peppers, cucumber relish, 1000 island dressing, and swiss cheese (I always subsitute pepper jack, yum).

The sandwich is served with seriously delicious cucumbers and homemade chips. We also ordered a side of fries and onion rings which are good (not out of this world amazing but good) especially with the different dipping sauces.

I ate calamari for the first time here on a previous visit. Although I have nothing to compare it too, it was tasty. The Kiwi 3′Some ($8.90) is a good appetizer that includes, fries, rings and calamari.

We usually go during happy hour for $3 drinks but they have several food and drink specials through the week. The servers are always friendly and attentive plus they have games (like Jenga) to play while you wait for your food. Fun!

One of the recent LivingSocial daily deals was a $20 Tioli’s Crazee Burger voucher for $10. We are in Old Town quite a bit so this was perfect!

When I bought this I didn’t realize it was called Crazee Burger because the burgers are well… crazy. Ostrich, Antelope, Alligator, and Kangaroo are just a few of the meats on the menu. Kangaroo?!?! Everybody loves a kangaroo.. that’s like eating a kitten!

I checked out their website though and saw that the original restaurant (North Park) was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. I love love love that show so had really high hopes and was excited to eat!

After looking over the menu I decided on the organic cheeseburger ($8.99) and my husband went with the crab burger ($8.99). We also got a side of onion rings and fries.

My husband enjoyed his crab burger (I didn’t taste it) and we both thought the fries were pretty good. They put Parmesan cheese on them which gives the fries a really fun pop. The onion rings were standard good and then my burger… oh my burger. I had really high hopes for it so I was super disappointed when it was.. well… just a burger. Not bad, not good.. just a burger.

With that being said, the employees were super cool and friendly. We were welcomed the moment we walked in and felt right at home the entire time. Definitely an A+ in that department.

They have decent happy hour specials on weekdays from 2-6pm and were more then willing to give customers samples of their beers and wines (at least during our visit this was the case).

All in all we had a good experience. I was disappointed in the food and don’t know that I would go back but would definitely recommend it to someone wanting to try an exotic burger (like wild boar!). What the heck?

One of the past Daily Save deals was a San Diego Harbor Tour for just $10. I snagged two and this last weekend my husband and I headed downtown for a harbor adventure.

You can choose between a North tour which goes towards Point Loma or a South tour heading towards Coronado. We chose the South tour because my husband enjoys hearing about the Navy ships and I wanted to see the Hotel Del (which I ended up missing completely).

The boat had two levels. The top level is open with plenty of comfy seating and standing room and if you prefer the no wind in your hair tour, the bottom is closed in with windows, seating and a bar.. woot!

The tour is just an hour long (there is also a two hour tour) and it seemed to go really quick but we had a good time. My favorite part was the views of the city from the bay.

One of the recent SignOn daily deals was a $25 Weevil Burger voucher for $12. I love to try new places so I snatched it up.

The restaurant has a super relaxed feel to it, almost like a country bar except it’s not a bar and I didn’t see any cowboy hats or giant belt buckles. There were however steer horns on the wall.

After picking our booth we were brought a tray full of condiments like pickles, onions, ketchup, etc and ordered a pitcher of beer ($7.99) and a side of onion rings ($3.49) to start.

I saw a sign out front that said pitchers of beer for $5.99. I’m not sure if we ordered the wrong beer or at the wrong time. I didn’t ask and didn’t think to look when we left.

It took me forever to decide what to order but finally went with the Southwest Chicken Breast Sandwich ($8.49 : jack cheese, mild chilies, lettuce, tomato & a side of salsa) . The husband got the A-One-Derful Burger ($7.49 : three cheeses, A1 sauce, chilies, sour cream, lettuce & tomato)

We both really enjoyed our choices, like home cooking I didn’t have to clean up! The only thing I would have changed was my side of salsa just because it was from a jar and I love a good homemade salsa.

The fries were good, a little to good probably. I forced myself to leave most of them. They tasted like the fries my mom used to make in the FryDaddy. You know, fried in straight up grease. Delicious, but I’m trying to do better.

Our waitress was great, the whole experience at Weevil Burger was pretty great actually. We will definitely keep it on the radar for a return visit.

One of the recent BuyWithMe daily deals was a $45 Maria Maria voucher for $20. Maria Maria is located in Mission Valley near the UltraStar theaters, we combined it with a movie voucher and made a date out of it!

The restaurant is decorated in a Carlos Santana inspired theme, we sat in the dining area next to some amazing artwork that extended down the entire wall. I really enjoyed the atmosphere.

Our waiter brought us chips can salsa to start, a spicy green and a chunky red. I didn’t try the green but the red was honestly the best salsa I had ever had. It wasn’t spicy, more sweet. I absolutely loved it. My husband seemed to enjoy the green, he ate it all before I could taste it.

For our main dish, my husband ordered the Crab & Shrimp Enchiladas ($17.99) and I had a Chicken Burrito Maria ($10.99). Everything was presented very nicely but I admit my burrito looked really unappetizing to me.

After digging in, we really enjoyed our meals but both thought everything was a bit spicy. Our drinks ran out a few times and we had to wait for refills. The restaurant was pretty empty so I wasn’t real thrilled with that. I wouldn’t say the service was bad, but it wasn’t that great either. Our waiter didn’t seem that interested in making sure we had everything we needed.

The star of the show was this bowl of roasted corn ($3.99). We really should have ordered two as it was THE tastiest corn I’ve had in some time. I would have never even thought to order a side of roasted corn (off the cob) if it wasn’t for this review from Mary. I had been keeping a mental image of her corn and knew I wanted it!

We looked at the dessert menu but nothing really stood out so my husband had a cup of coffee ($3) and we were on our way to the movie portion of our date…. Bridesmaids!

We definitely enjoyed our Maria Maria experience, good food, good atmosphere. The service left something to be desired but we would definitely consider going back for a nice sit down meal.
